Abstract

Severus of Antioch: His Life and Times offers many fresh insights into the life, theology, reception history, exegetical approach, and asceticism of Severus, a key figure in the Oriental Orthodox Church, and central to the current discussions on Oriental Orthodox and Eastern Orthodox reunion. It includes articles from established Syriac scholars and theologians including well-known international authors Pauline Allen, Sebastian Brock, Rifaat Ebied and Ken Parry. The topics covered have immense theological and historical significance for the churches of the Middle East and the history of Late Antiquity, and explore new understandings of Severus’ exegetical context, the theological and political impact of his sermons, and his relation to the many ideological currents of his time.

Abstract

Severus of Antioch is by far the most prolific and well known theologian of the non-Chalcedonian churches. Although his life and writings came to our knowledge in Syriac, gaining him the title “Crown of the Syriac Literature,” many texts relating to his life and works survived in the Coptic and Copto-Arabic tradition, as well as a number of other texts that were traditionally attributed to him. This book provides an analysis of the remaining texts in Coptic and in Copto-Arabic, as well as the texts ascribed to Severus. The last part of the book deals with the veneration of Severus of Antioch in the Coptic Church.

Abstract

This present volume is dedicated to Gawdat Gabra, the former director of the Coptic Museum in Cairo and now Professor of Coptology at the University of Claremont in the USA. Dr Gabra is one of the pioneers of Coptic studies in modern times and the author and editor of many valuable and highly regarded monographs, series and articles. Although the papers in this volume do not have a single theme, all of them share an interest and focus on one topic: Egypt. They cover many fields in Coptology and Egyptology, such as art, Biblical studies, liturgy, Copto-Arabic studies and archaeology. They present the results of recent academic research and archaeological excavations. The seventeen contributors to this volume belong to three continents and work in seven countries all over the world, but all of them appreciate the long-time efforts of Gawdat Gabra for Coptic studies on an academic level as well as his indefatigable labour to make laymen aware of Coptic Egypt.

Abstract

The theotokias are prayers dedicated to the Virgin Mary, the Mother of God (Theotokos). In the early fourteenth century, the Patriarch of the Coptic Church, Ibn Qiddis, composed and paraphrased – in Coptic – the Theotokias. His work has only survived in a single manuscript. This book introduces the author, John Ibn Qiddis, his liturgical, pastoral, and literary activities, and the Coptic language of his time, followed by the texts and an English translation.
